The Monster 5 for Friday--Careers Edition--October 1
The careers of some very important people made the news this week: White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel's resignation was announced amid rumors that he plans to run for mayor of Chicago. North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's youngest son, the heretofore little-heard-of Kim Jong-un, was given high-level posts in that regime, apparently paving the way for his ascension to leadership. And Michael Bolton will no longer be moonlighting as a dancer--he was the second contender eliminated from ABC's "Dancing With the Stars." It's a good thing he didn't quit his day job.
Whether your career puts you in the headlines or not, we want to make sure you get all the news and job advice you need to succeed. So in case you missed them, here are five of this week's top stories from the world of work:
5. Addressing a cover letter to "whom it may concern" is one way to ensure that it's never read. But how do you find out the name of the hiring manager? Career expert Liz Ryan tells you how, in "5 Sneaky Ways to Find Out a Hiring Manager's Name."
4. There's a lot of job-hunting advice out there--but not all of it is good advice. Work Coach Cafe's Ronnie Ann offers help on weeding out the bad advice from the good, in "8 Ways Job Advice Messes with Your Head."
3. Getting bumped off the track on your way to the top is every high-achiever's recurring nightmare. How can you be sure it doesn't happen to you? Read "Stay on Track to Move Up in Your Career."
2. Everybody trips over a few words or now and again during an interview. And that’s OK—recruiters don’t expect a perfect batting average. But some comments are sure to get your interviewer to say, “Thanks for stopping by.” Avoid them. Read "Watch Your Mouth."
1. Are you thinking of heading down a new career path? This could be a great time for it, when so much is changing in business, and new opportunities are replacing old ones. Forbes.com has a collection of expert advice in "Career Change 2010."
