Emergency Exit: What to Know Before You Quit

Have you ever had one of those days when you’ve reached the breaking point, wanting to quit your job on the spot, and make a fast exit?

Perhaps, deep down, you've already decided to leave and one incident was just the last straw. Your gut reaction, of course, is to walk away and never look back. This exact situation played out in the life of one career flight attendant, who made national news Monday after an altercation with a passenger aboard a JetBlue flight.

But before you cross the point of no return, is it best to give yourself a time out to rethink? How do you approach this with your manager? What’s next in your career? Should you wait until you’re hired for another job?

So if you’re fed up and thinking about quitting your job, take a moment to read these articles from the Monster.com Career Advice center:

1. Before blurting out “I quit,” think through your job situation and how quitting might affect your future.

2. Not happy at your current job? Does that mean it’s definitely time to quit? Maybe, but it's also important to know why you aren't happy and why it might be time to go.

3. Quitting a job leaves you in a bad situation when interviewing for new roles. Remember, you’ll need a good answer to the question, "Why did you leave your last job?"

Have you ever abruptly up and quit a job? What did you do? How did it impact your career? Tell us in the comments field below.

"I Quit," is usually uttered behind a wall of passion...STUPID passion, that is. Of course, except under circumstances of extreme danger and/or harassment, cooler heads should be the order of the day. Moreover, QUITTING strips one of unemployment benefits. I say, stand, take-it, and secure another job first before quitting. P.s., you don't want to lose your vacation time--do you?

I think in today's employment climate it would be foolish to just walk out of a job.

Great post, and what stood out to me is point 3, leaving yourself in a bad situation. it would probably be more advisable to start looking for jobs 1st, and get a feel of how the employment market is doing b4 u actually say i quit. for all you know, u maybe left jobless for months. nice post, cheers.

Why do we, as a society, have such a bizarre allegiance to the corporate world? Look at it from the perspective of work in general. There is something findamentally wrong with working for another person -- and if that person is a jerk, which most "bosses" are, then you're dealing with a life crisis. Trust your gut and quit when you've had enough. You'll never get rich or happy working for someone else. And if you're working your butt off just to make other people (higher in the corp. hierarchy) millionaires, then you're never going to reach your potential. Figure out how to work on your own or think of something "entrepreneurial." As Teddy Roosevelt once said, "Do what you can with what you have wherever you are."
