Are You in Love with Your Job?
In this lead-up to Valentine’s Day, thoughts turn to hearts, candy, flowers and romance. You love your significant other. You love your kids. You love your parents. But do you love your job?
According to a Harris Interactive survey from last February, 9 percent of respondents would marry their job if it were a living person, while 34 percent would date it seriously. Forty-three percent are playing the field, reporting they’d date their job casually. On the flip side, 9 percent said they didn’t like their jobs, and 5 percent wanted to break up immediately. Ouch.

I have a seasonal job at the Holywood Bowl. Where most of the Ushers at the Hollywood Bowl, have a regular job and their Usher job is a second job, I call my Usher job, my seasonal job, my main job. I love meeting my patrons at the Bowl. They are some of my best friends that I only see in the summertime. I would love to do this job year round.

1) There is much talk in organisations about the concept of ‘meaning’ – what does it mean to you and how important is this in your work?
2) Do you think that work in general is becoming more or less meaningful? Why is that and does it matter?
3) Do you have an example of an organisation that succeeds in making work meaningful for its employees? What does it do to create that meaning?
