Arnel Pineda’s Journey to a New Job
As a child of the ’80s, I am a huge fan of the arena rock band Journey, especially their legendary lead singer, Steve Perry. But as anyone who’s ever seen “Behind the Music” knows, Perry and Journey had a falling out about a decade ago, and he left the band. The remaining members of Journey, which was founded by Neal Schon, replaced him with singer Steve Augeri. After Augeri blew out his vocal chords in 2006, he was replaced by Jeff Scott Soto when Journey went on tour. But the band was looking for someone different.
Enter YouTube.
One night, Schon was surfing the site when he came across a video of a Filipino singer named Arnel Pineda and his band, the Zoo. Pineda was doing this cover of Journey’s monster hit “Faithfully.” So blown away was Schon by Pineda’s vocal resemblance to Perry that he found a way to contact Pineda -- who was completely starstruck. Pineda traveled halfway around the world to audition and subsequently become Journey’s lead singer, taking the lead for Journey’s latest multi-disc album, Revelation, as well as its current summer tour. And he’s getting rave reviews.
As a Steve Perry lover, I am torn. Pineda’s voice is amazing, but he’s still no Steve. But what I’m more amazed by is Pineda’s story. Here he was, playing clubs and bars in Asia for more than 25 years, and because he was smart enough to use YouTube to get the word out on himself, he got himself a better job.
While I’m not suggesting we all belt out ’80s power ballads and post them online, there’s something to be learned here about promoting your talents, through the Internet or otherwise. When done correctly, being proactive is your ticket to career advancement. I think that’s something we can all welcome with open arms. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Hi! I just needed to clarify that it wasn'y Arnel Pineda himself who uploaded his videos at YouTube. It was his friend and former bandmate, Noel Gomez, who uploaded them. Arnel did not know anything about, except that Noel asked his permission for it and he said yes. It was all Noel's (fault) idea :)
That said, thanks for this article...

Yes, you are right, Arnel Pineda is NO Steve Perry and he is NOT trying to be, nor will he ever be. With all due respect to "the voice," he was a great singer in his time. Arnel has a different style and he fits more to today's generation. To all of Arnel's detractors, get over it, SP's time is over, it's Arnel's season now! Long live Journey!

Arnel's success is testament to how the hiring landscape has changed for the better. A person *can* be hired based on a video on YouTube. In Arnel’s case, his new gig is well warranted. Possessing a very similar sound to Steve Perry, it’s obvious why he was auditioned and hired as new lead singer to Journey.

Of course he is no Steve do you see any resemblance in physical appearances and voices? Steve Perry is a NASAL SINGER(FALSETTO HEAD VOICE) and ARNEL IS A POWERFUL SOULFUL BELTER(FULL VOICE) Two different singing styles. Sure love the guy who left the band and its fans TWICE! Arnel did not ask to become the lead singer, "THE CO-FOUNDER" NEAL SCHON did.
Awesome article by the way!

I have difficulty differentiating Arnel's voice from Steve Perry's. What I like about this Arnel guy is that he is so full of energy that I sometimes find myself moving my body around when I listen to him sing. And I am 49 years old! Let's enjoy the music no matter the ethnic background.

Set aside the issue of ethnicity. There's no mistake about Arnel. Schon made the right decision hiring him and the guy has proven he got what it takes to become the new lead singer for one of the most successful band of the 80's.

Correction: Noel Gomez is not AP's former bandmate, he is a very consistent fan just like most of us. Rock On...Arnel Pineda. Peace.

It is a fact that the Internet has been a tool for maximizing success rate, look at Journey now, their new album gone Platinum.
Whether it would be ad's, careers or products, making the Internet as a tool for what you need would lead to achievable success.
Compare it to INXS they use the TV media and have a show called Rockstar to pick their front man what they have achieved ? I think it would be a different story if they have used the Internet. :)

Im so obsessed with Journey. I need more Journey/Arnel songs! BIG BIG FAN
Arnel is a vital link to the Complete heart of Journey. He is awsome in voice and soul... powerful and strong. He has the most versitile voice i have ever heard.
His humble spirt is just another reason to love the guy.

Arnel has a powerful, wonderful, versitile voice and sings from HIS soul. He is gold. Genuine. I dont care if he sings his own songs other bands songs or old Journey or Now Journey. He is awsome doing them all. I feel he is a vital artery to the heart of Journey. Yes, each band member brings their own God given talents... and with arnel as the front man....yep, together they are spectacular.

If you "have a hard time differentiating" Perry's voice from Arne's, you need some SERIOUS help.
