Life Changes and Your Career

Summertime is often when people graduate from college, get married, have kids, start thinking about moving or embark on other major life changes. I should know -- four years ago today, I was a week away from my wedding day.

I remember vividly how all-consuming my impending nuptials became. Things I never thought I’d care about became incredibly important: What kind of salad dressing should we have? Should I go with pink roses or champagne-colored ones? Did all my girls have their dresses tailored yet? I must have driven my coworkers crazy with all the niggling, essential details involved with planning a wedding.

But even in the midst of chaos, my career remained steadfast. So before embarking on the honeymoon I was so looking forward to, I took care of business -- I worked crazy hours to make sure everything was done. And this investment in my career while my life was topsy-turvy paid off: Less than a year later, I was promoted. Coincidence? I think not.
