Should You Blog Your Job?
Work is a major part of our lives, in all its struggles, triumphs and failures. Meanwhile, blogs are a great way to vent, sort out feelings and entertain readers. So following this logic, it makes sense to write about office happenings on your personal Web site.
But as we've all seen, blogging about work after hours can be dangerous. Just one example: The author of one of my favorite blogs, Dooce, was famously fired for what she wrote about work on her site. As Heather says on Dooce's About This Site page:
I started this Web site in February 2001. A year later I was fired from my job for this Web site, because I had written stories that included people in my workplace. My advice to you is BE YE NOT SO STUPID. Never write about work on the Internet unless your boss knows and sanctions the fact that YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT WORK ON THE INTERNET.
If you could lose your job over what you write, why would you take a chance? I think work can sometimes be worth talking about. You just have to decide if it's worth the risks.
If you do blog your workday, this article is a great overview of the perils of journaling your job and provides tips from experts and work bloggers on how to keep out of trouble -- and stay employed.
