Businesses to Start in 2006

If you’ve been thinking about branching out on your own for a while, why not now? Entrepreneur.com offers 29 hot business ideas for the coming new year. You might find one or two of your own ideas on this list (I know I’ve definitely considered opening a chocolate cafe a few years back):

  • Tea: This $6.8 billion industry is expected to reach $10 billion by 2010, according to the article. Starbucks who?
  • Online Specialty Foods: Younger people (read: the spenders) are buying more of everything from fine wines to gourmet cheeses. This can be a good option if you want to avoid overhead costs.
  • Do-It-Yourself Meal Preparation: This is a new concept bred from the demand to cut down on daily household-related stress. “Customers attend sessions where, in just a couple of hours, they whip up enough meals to last a month,” the article explains. “Once frozen, those meals become no-hassle dinners at a later date. Offering fun, stress-free cooking, this business idea has reached a boiling point.”
  • One-Product Restaurants: Remember that “Seinfeld” episode in which Kramer came up with the idea of opening up a restaurant that served only peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches? Three lawyers in Minnesota actually made a multimillion-dollar business out of a similar idea when they opened up P.B. Loco, a cafe serving, well, peanut butter sandwiches.
  • Chocolate Cafes: I’ve always thought it would be a great idea to open up a chocolate lovers’ version of Starbucks. Apparently, I’m not the only one.
  • Shredding: I thought this one was a peculiar one, but I guess there are a whole lot of people out there with secrets. It also makes sense if you’re trying to protect yourself from identity theft, I suppose.
  • ID-Theft Prevention and Recovery: We saw this one coming. I’m going tag this one along with the hosted security provider, data backup and surveillance-camera business ideas. People are losing their minds over losing their stuff.
  • Mobile Add-Ons: With more than 180 million wireless customers in the US, this market isn’t exactly a gamble. Admit it: You know you love your ringtones. Along with this goes the so-called aftermarket accessories industry (your iPod hoodie, etc.).

Ah, food, fear and frills are still raking in the big bucks. And there are a whole bunch of other ideas on the list. If you find your fancy in one of these and decide to take the plunge, be sure to check out these articles:
