Poor Sales Etiquette
Last weekend I was on a mission to find brown shoes. I went to the mall, hopeful I could find what I was looking for and still have time to make it home for the Red Sox game.
As I was about to turn into the store, I heard someone say, “Hey, in the white shirt. Do I know you?” I turned around to see who it was, and a 20-something guy with spiky hair said, “Come over here. You have to hear about this deal I have on this cell phone.” I looked at him, smiled and said, “No, I HAVE to buy shoes,” and turned away.
I understand that in this world companies need to set themselves apart, but where does it stop? If you are one of these mall vendors, think about your approach. If the young male had been saying “great deals on cell phones” and I walked over to his booth -- that’s one thing. I am obviously at the mall to buy something, and even if I’m not interested in a phone right now, I could be tomorrow.
I really don’t think screaming out to people as if you know them is the right way to get them to buy your product. Besides, it’s just poor etiquette.
