My Commute Is Work, Too
If you live in Massachusetts, the following probably won’t come as a shock: According to this article, our fair commonwealth ranked the second lowest in the contiguous 48 states and DC on a written driver’s test administered to more than 5,000 licensed drivers. (Rhode Island was lowest.) Rounding out the bottom five were Northeast neighbors New Jersey, New York and DC.
If you don’t live in Massachusetts, I’m here to tell you that everything you’ve heard about us as drivers is true: We’re rude. We’re impulsive. And we will flip you off -- sometimes for no reason.
It’s not just confined to the big city, either. My ride back and forth to Monster takes me along a bucolic two-lane country road dotted with farm stands and livestock grazing contentedly in the fields; it’s everything you’d think the New England countryside could be. It also includes tailgaters, slowpokes and those lovely people who like to cut you off despite there being no cars behind you. It’s only 18 miles, but some days it feels much longer. Maybe I ought to get some books on tape, like Norma suggested in a February blog post.
The tailgaters are my worst pet peeve. I used to take my foot off the gas to hold them up, but as I grow older (and hopefully wiser), I’ve learned to pull over and let them go have their accident somewhere else. But I still don’t know how they think they’re going to get there faster by riding up my butt. And as I draw closer to Maynard, I have to remember to sheathe my itchy middle finger and stifle my horn, as I could be getting into an altercation with someone I see in the Monster hallways every day.
Could you have a road rage problem? Take this test to find out.

Heh... then there are those of us travel 2 hours each way, every day.
Wish I could get paid for those lost hours...

Been my experience that most people who are tailgated, ALWAYS drive under the speed limit or are NEVER moving with the flow of traffic.
I think people such as these have the same problem only in reverse. They aren't going to be bullied into driving the speed limit or traveling with the flow of traffic therefore they are going to piss of as many people as they can.
Letting their foot off the gas, going even slower, and well, pissing people off even more, just doesn’t make sense to me.
Why would they want to put themselves in a position to get hammered? Just drive for Christ sakes, you're not the only one on the road.

I make home visits as a CNA. I drive 80-100 miles a day, and don't get paid milage. I'm told my company used to pay it. Is there a way to get them to do it again? I need to quit otherwise, as My takehome pay is about $4.10 after I deduct the gasoline.

I learned to drive in Massachusetts, then moved away nearly 30 years ago.
When I visit, I arrive in Boston or Hartford and drive west on the turnpike.
I have NEVER figured out why people will pass, then come back to the right lane with less than two car lengths between us. Sure, we all learned the left lane is for passing only (at least I did in 1972-73 driving class) but let's be real here!
Boston doesn't help. 2 lanes driving east. No problem. Traffic light. No problem. Past the light, though, the right-most of those two is parking. What's up with that? It would be different if the right-most of the pre-light lanes was a right-turn only lane, but that's not the case.
Other than that, and Pittsfield drivers thinking traffic is atrocious if there are more than 4 cars in line at a light, it's nowhere near as bad as the national capital region.

What dumbass would think the dangerous practice of tailgating is alright? A lot of us have kids in the car and just want to get to where we are going alive, even if we're five minutes late. Get a grip, hotrod, and let the rest of us drive in safety. Go fulfill your self-destructive tendencies in a way that won't hurt innocents.
