Embrace Your Commute

After college and before I bought a car, my movements and career choices were confined to public transportation routes. I would read a couple of books a week, was able to keep my magazine pile to a minimum and desperately longed for my own vehicle so I could control where I went and when.

I recall that time fondly. Sure, I didn't always have a seat, but I could read standing up. Whenever I brought work home, the 60 minutes or so it took me to go six miles usually provided enough time to get it done. And for one of my first jobs, I was actually able to walk to work in nice weather. Maybe I couldn't read while walking the two miles, but I got some good exercise in -- even if I ended up taking the bus home. But now that I drive, I feel like I can't take quite as much advantage of the time.

Yes, sometimes I complain about my commute. It's not the amount of time it takes, but more that once I'm done with my day at work, I have yet one more thing to do before I'm relaxing at home. But this article from CareerJournal.com reminded me of some of the benefits of commuting.

First, it definitely is worth it to have some time to unwind. One time, I ran into a former professor and his wife downtown. They lived in a condo only a couple of blocks from where she worked. She told me how sometimes she had to walk around the block a bit before going into the house, because she didn't have enough time to separate herself from work.

A couple of years ago, I was on a mission to make my driving time more productive. I was all about book tapes. Not only was I accomplishing something, but boy did time fly. I even tried to teach myself Russian, but the tapes I took out of the library were dependent on the book.

The point is, your commute is your time, so be sure to treat it like it is.

Try downloading books and putting them on an iPod. I'm in heaven. Not only on the bus but every spare odd moment -- lunch, elevator, waiting room, long software downloads. Finally I get to "read" all the books and magazines I want.

I can hardly wait for the new Shuffle. Lighter, simpler, cheaper.

My ride to work, each way - each day, is 2 hours, and has been for the last 8 years. I live for talk radio... I tried the books on tape/CD route, but I found my mind wondering too often (and a few times, nodding off).

A good talk radio station keeps you engaged: whether you agree or disagree with the points being made, you are actively processing the information and formualting repsonses.

There are days I sit in my driveway, after coming home, for up to 10 minutes while an engaging discussion is ongoing. It's addicting.

Thank you for this posting. It's just what I needed. I just turned down a job 1 mile away from my house for one that requires a 40-minute drive.

I've been agonizing over the choice. This really helps.

I work two miles from where I live, a thirty minute walk each way. I really enjoy my walk to and from work. In the winter I can actually enjoy the snowfall and spend time outside. If not for my walk to work I would hibernate all winter. I listen to talk radio on head phones so I am still educated and engaged while I walk. Walking doesn't release vehicle exhaust into the air. At least once a week I walk through the square and window shop.
Walking to work really enhances my life!

Thanks for the posting. I'm looking for a job in an area just over an hour from home. (There aren't many jobs where I live.) The drive is not bad but the longest drive I've ever had is about 30-40 minutes. Your comments make me see that I could really enjoy this time. Thanks!

I work from home now about 70% of the time which is dreadfully painful! I love being so close to my wife and children, but not having that separation between home and work is really difficult. I find myself waking up, getting dressed and going outside to breathe in a little air before tromping down to my basement office (cave) for the day. Sure, i'm saving over $100/month in gas (even in my Saturn) compared to my last job and even more savings on lunches that are only 30-paces away in the refrigerator, but that separation time really helped me to unwind. Maybe I'll start walking the dog in the morning and the evening as my "commute". We can both use the exercise and fresh air.
