One More Time

The economy's picking up, so whether you've been looking for work for a while or you're ready to find a better job than your current one, now is the time to get ready for a change. But when was the last time you updated your resume? Even if you've revised it so many times you can't stand the sight of it, you should still take one more look. There is always something you can change, add, reword or highlight to make your resume stand out a little more.

Here are some tips that might help.

See what keywords recruiters are searching on.

Read about recruiters' pet peeves (to make sure your resume isn't getting on their nerves).

How to address a termination on your resume.

How to address unemployment or gaps in employment.

Make sure your resume is scannable.

Use keywords that are important for your industry.

Five tips to make sure your resume gets noticed.

Seeking Advice?

I feel I dont get interview offers due to a lack of a formal education. I have no college, however I have held positions of, Regional Operations Manager in Logistics, (currently) Retail Store Operations Manager. I offer a solid performance background, however another issue is 2 of my last 4 jobs ended in layoffs, due to cutbacks or business closings.

Any advice on how to inhance my lack of college?

Tom, make sure your resume shows some value for each of your job. Phrases such as "increase/decrease (something) by x%" should be more important to hiring managers than a degree (or lack thereof). Make sure your cover letter highlights those values too, so you can get past any gatekeepers.

I've done some serious work on my resume. Managers seem to really love it. But how can I get it infront of managers. I'd love to work at Microsoft. But applying for my dream jobs off the MS careers site has produced minimal results.

I went to 2 interviews in the last 4 weeks at MS through contract agencies. made it to the last round of each. down to 2 candidates, each position chose the other candidate as they had prior MS experience, where as I do not...yet.

How can I overcome this? Short of just keep trying with the contract jobs, how do FTE MS employees get perm positions? What can I do to better curb my job search tactics to get more MS FTE recruiter attention?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

I'm a recent graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and looking for a change in career. I have worked for a financial institution for about 5.5 years but have been so unhappy with myself and just don't feel I can advance anymore. I'm looking fo a change such as in the Information Technology Industry but need some guidance in how to improve my resume so I can get noticed by potential employers looking for a person who is willing to learn more about the technology world. I'm looking for a job that will provide a competitive wage opportunity and generous benefit package with little experience in the Information Technology World but much experience with leadership, teamwork, multi-tasking, and bilingual skills as well as over 8 years experience in customer service allowing me to work well under pressure. Can you help?
